Floating Ghosts
A few weeks ago, fantastic chap, @TheRevP, sent me a link to this walkabout of the semi-abandoned hulks that the American Navy has left rusting just northeast of San Francisco.
The images are haunting, and the story a bit harrowing, but what lingers for me is my imagined version of an audio-scape filled with sloshing waves and ancient, groaning, metal.
What I noticed first about this photo is that the guns are sealed with what appears to be duct tape. Duct tape must truly be the universal solution that will eventually solve all the world’s problems.
This also reminds me of past visits to the USS North Carolina, an old, decommissioned battleship docked in Wilmington, NC. She’s now a museum and historic site and I can’t hep but now wonder if the guns are sealed with duct tape …
I choose to assume the choice of seal is in honour of Cher’s video for “If I Could Turn Back Time” – wasn’t her outfit largely made of duct tape in that video?
A museum is a great use of that sort of behemoth. Sad to see them just rust apart while they wait to be scrapped.
Isn’t there an old quote that goes “They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore. Armies will duct tape their guns and navies will turn their ships into floating casinos”?
Heyyy, I think you have something with this floating casino/international waters angle – who knew the Book of Isaiah would be so handy with the gambling tips?
